Shigella

Simple precautions taken while traveling to the developing world can prevent Shigella infection.  Be sure to drink only treated or boiled water, and eat only cooked hot foods or fruits you peel yourself. The same precautions prevent other types of traveler’s diarrhea.

Removing Shigella from Your Environment

The presence of Shigella in any environment indicates a problem with fecal contamination, a problem everyone will want to solve.  But, it can be difficult to control the spread of Shigella in daycare situations and in the households of children wearing diapers.  The risk of spreading Shigella also must be considered when visiting other family members, especially those who might be older, such as grandparents, or others who might have compromised immune systems and thus be at greater risk of serious complications associated with Shigella.  Most cleaners and disinfectants do not have demonstrated, much less Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) validated and certified effectiveness against Shigella.  Also, some disinfectants, such as bleach, are highly dangerous around young children, can damage many surfaces, have an unpleasant odor, and are not guaranteed effective against a wide range of organisms.

Fortunately, there is a solution to the disinfection challenges faced by environments including home and childcare centers, as well as other places young children congregate such as pre-schools, pediatrician offices, play dates, parks, playgrounds, church youth rooms or nurseries, as well other locations commonly visited by young children.  Since the care givers of young children are also likely to be exposed to, and infected with, Shigella, just about anywhere with shared restroom facilities should be concerned about the certain elimination of Shigella contamination.
